Robert Sterrett was said to have been born in Scotland and to have been a son of Benjamin Sterrett although this has not been been reliably documented. The traditional story is that he, as a young boy, fled with his parents, brothers, and two sisters from Scotland to the north of Ireland. He married Mary Ramsey in Donegal County, Ireland. They emigrated to America about 1730 and settled in Chester, later Lancaster, and later Duphin County on Swatara Creek in Pennsylvania.
